UFC 300 fulfilled its full potential as the greatest mixed martial arts card of all time. Max Holloway’s buzzer-beating knockout of Justin Gaethje remains forever, and Alex Pereira is dominating the light heavyweight division in a way not seen in years.
No one expects the UFC to match the success of UFC 300 anytime soon. But even with tempered expectations, it’s hard to get excited about next month’s fight. His four events between UFC 300 and UFC 302 have been lukewarm at best. The promotion returns on April 27th with UFC Fight Night: Mateusz Nicolaou vs. Alex Perez. Nicolaou is coming back from a loss and Perez has lost his last three fights. The promotion returns to pay-per-view starting May 4th at UFC 301. UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja vs. Steve Arseg won’t be a thrilling headliner, but fans will be happy to see Hall of Famer Jose Aldo return to the Octagon. Derrick Lewis vs. Rodrigo Nascimento and Edson Barboza vs. Lerone Murphy round out this month’s Fight Night headliners.
A tepid May will happily give way to a big hit in June. The 3 cards announced in June look amazing at first glance. Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier will headline UFC 302 in a five-round co-main event with Sean Strickland vs. Paulo Costa. Middleweight title eliminator Robert Whittaker takes on Khamzat Chimaev on June 22 at UFC Fight Night in Saudi Arabia. All roads lead to his UFC International Fight of the Week on June 29th, his UFC 303 marquee bout, Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler.
