Jon Jones (27-1) doesn’t appear to be underestimating Stipe Miocic (20-4), judging by his latest training video.
Jones was originally scheduled to defend his heavyweight title against Miocic at UFC 295 in November 2023 but was forced to withdraw due to a pectoral muscle injury. Tom Aspinall knocked out Sergey Pavlovic in a hastily arranged interim title fight to save the card.
Aspinall has since been working towards a title unification bout with Jones, but “Bones” remains adamant that he will fight Miocic when he is healthy, while Miocic has also rejected Aspinall’s offer and insists on fighting Jones alone. The general consensus is that the Jones-Miocic bout could be the final one for both fighters, leaving Aspinall’s future in uncertainty.
Miocic and Jones are expected to appear in the main event of UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in November. Miocic recently posted a video of Jones, a part-time firefighter, hitting the mitts in a less-than-sharp manner. But when a fan showed the video to Jones, the champion wasn’t convinced. Jones believes Miocic may be trying to trick him with training footage and plans to prepare even harder.
“I’m no military historian or anything, but here are some things I’ve learned from my time,” Jones wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “A big part of combat strategy is timing and deception. Simply put, when your opponent looks weak, prepare yourself even more. Complacency is the greatest enemy of a warrior like me.”
