Conor McGregor may never get over his rivalry with fighters from Dagestan, judging by his recent criticism of Islam Makhachev.
Makhachev is scheduled to defend his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier (30-8) in the main event of UFC 302 on Saturday. In recent photos of both fighters wearing their new 3Eight and 5Eight gloves, eagle-eyed fans spotted scars on Makhachev’s leg, leading them to speculate about a possible staph infection. At this time, it has not been confirmed whether Makhachev does indeed have staph and how it will affect the fight.
McGregor didn’t miss the opportunity to slam Makhachev and his team on social media, but “Notorious” also predicted that the Dagestan would submit Poirier in the first round anyway.
“Stuff again. But this inbreed lives with stuff,” McGregor said in a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter). “Definitely infested with stuff on this team. Scruff bastards. I don’t think it matters what you’re into. He came on as a substitute for Dustin in the first period.”
“You’re such dirty bastards, I’m sick of you. Wash yourselves! Wash your clothes! Wash your mat! Wash every day you dirty bastards. 🤢”
McGregor’s longtime rivalry with the Dagestan fighters began in the lead up to his title fight against Makhachev’s teammate and mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, at UFC 229. After hearing an argument between Nurmagomedov and McGregor’s former teammate, Artyom Lobov, at UFC 223 media day, McGregor flew to New York and, along with several other fighters, infamously threw a dolly at the bus carrying “The Eagle.”
Tensions rose at UFC 229 when Nurmagomedov defeated McGregor by submission in the fourth round and then immediately jumped into the cage to attack McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis. Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov’s teammates Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov were also suspended for jumping into the cage and attacking McGregor. Relations between the two camps have deteriorated since then, with McGregor criticizing the now-retired Nurmagomedov in random tweets.
