Impa Kasanganay’s quest for back-to-back titles is paying off in full.
The Kill Cliff FC star earned the top seed in the Professional Fighters League light heavyweight playoffs in 2023 with a second-round doctor’s stoppage victory over 2023 PFL Europe kingpin Jakob Nedow at PFL5 on Friday night at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“I told myself, if I were leading the heavenly army, how would I fight? God put me here and God will get me out of here,” Kasanganay said. “No other guy will do that. He’s the champion. I have to take the win from him.”
Kasangany, who defeated Joshua Silveira to win the PFL title a year ago, will rematch the No. 4 seed “Coninha” in the light heavyweight semifinals at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla. on Aug. 16. On the other side of the 205-pound division, 2022 champion Rob Wilkeson will clash with Bellator veteran Dovretzhan Yagsimuradov.
Meanwhile, former Bellator champion Brent Primus made his biggest impact at lightweight on Friday, defeating Solomon Renfro by rear-naked choke in the third round to claim the No. 1 spot at 155 pounds. He will face No. 4 seed and 2023 finalist Clay Collard in one of the semifinals, while the other will feature No. 2 seed Gadzhi Rabadanov against No. 3 seed Michael Dufort.
“There’s nothing better in life. I love this platform that is PFL,” Primus said. “This is for my family. I’m going to Hollywood, Florida for $1 million. I’m going to win it. Let’s go.”
While the PFL postseason is taking shape, there’s one more job to do: next week, attention shifts to the featherweight and welterweight divisions as PFL 6 heads to the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the final event of the regular season.
