The Japanese judoka made his successful ONE Championship debut on Friday, scoring multiple takedowns and using a dominant top game to defeat Sanlan by split decision in the third round of the strawweight showcase at ONE Friday Fights 68 at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. Two of the three ringside judges gave the victory to Wakabayashi (8-1-1, 1-0 ONE), who was in tears when the verdict was read out.
Sanlan (14-3, 0-2 ONE) was content to defend from the bottom. Wakabayashi took him to the mat in all three rounds, working his way into half guard and landing some light ground-and-pound and several arm-triangle choke attempts. Sanlan fought back with some sharp elbow strikes from his back, but they didn’t make much of a difference. Sanlan fought back late in the third round, catching a kick from Wakabayashi and slamming him to the floor, landing an elbow to the head and a knee to the body. But Sanlan’s attempts to finish the fight went unanswered.
