The always flamboyant Abdul Razak Alhassan seemed to have his eye on Joaquin Buckley rather than fellow Denver native Cody Brundage ahead of their middleweight showdown at UFC Denver on Saturday.
Alhassan was quick to vent his anger at Buckley and current 185-pound champion Dricus du Plessis for comments about being a “real” African fighter in the UFC, but he promised to take those frustrations and more out on Brundage, who was last seen getting dominated by Beau Nickall.
The bout began with Brundage landing several punches and desperately trying for a takedown. As both fighters bounced against the cage, Alhassan stopped Brundage’s takedown attempt, momentarily dropping him face-down on the canvas. Brundage panicked and stumbled as he took a flurry of punches from his opponent. Cody was finally able to get on one foot, but Alhassan continued to rain down punches, landing multiple hits on the side and back of his opponent’s head. Referee Dan Miragliotta paused the bout 37 seconds into the bout due to a blow to the back of the head.
Brundage, who suffered from dizziness, told the cageside doctor moments later that he couldn’t continue, much to the dismay of a highly excited Alhassan.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Cody Brundage ended in a no contest (accidental blow to the back of the head) at 0:37 of the first round.
