Tom Aspinall has great respect for Stipe Miocic but doesn’t want the veteran to wait any longer for a title shot.
Miocic was originally scheduled to challenge Jon Jones for the heavyweight title at UFC 295 in November 2023, but an injury forced “Bones” to withdraw from the event, and Aspinall stepped up to take on Sergey Pavlovic in an interim title fight on the same card, knocking out the Russian in the first round.
Aspinall initially called for Jones to be stripped of his title. He has since changed his tune and is now calling for a title unification bout with Jones when he is ready to return to the Octagon. However, Jones is adamant about fighting Miocic when he returns, and the wrestling association seems keen to save the bout for later. The bout is rumoured to take place in New York in November. Aspinall, who is waiting for a shot at the absolute title, defended his interim title with a first-round knockout win over Curtis Blaydes in the co-main event of UFC 304 in Manchester last month.
Aspinall, who has made his case for a title unification bout while paying respect to both veterans, is now calling for Miocic to be removed from the boxing world. Aspinall points out that the 41-year-old Miocic just suffered a brutal knockout loss and has not fought in over three years. Aspinall argues that fans are not excited for Miocic’s return. The Briton argued that Miocic should be removed from the boxing world as “Joe Biden”, just as the US president has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential election.
“Get Stipe out of there,” Miocic told TNT Sports. “I’ll be honest with you, he’s 43 years old. [41] He’s 30 years old. He hasn’t fought in four years, and his last fight was a knockout loss. Sure, he’s an absolute legend in MMA. The best heavyweight of all time. Statistically, the best heavyweight of all time. But he needs to be taken out of the race. He needs to be like Joe Biden. He’s too old. Nobody’s interested anymore. I have a lot of respect for Stipe. Take him out and put me in. But that’s the right thing to do, don’t you think? It’s the right thing to do. Take Joe Biden out of there and put me in.”
