Welterweights Song Kenan and Ricky Glenn faced off on the early preliminaries card of UFC 305 on Saturday in Perth, Australia.
Both fighters are looking to win, with Kenan coming into the bout after a loss to Kevin Jousset. The Chinese fighter has a record of 1 win and 3 losses in his last 4 bouts, while Glen has a record of 0 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw in his last 3 bouts, last competing in October 2023, where he lost to Drew Dober.
The bout started with both fighters trading leg kicks and getting straight into the action. Glenn caught Song with a left hand and managed to sit him down. Song quickly recovered and the two exchanged dirty boxing in the clinch. Glenn broke in again and landed a left hook, pushing Song against the fence and re-establishing the clinch.
Song tried to gain an advantage, throwing some short punches while trying to get off the fence, but Glenn kept up the pressure against the fence in the clinch. Two minutes into the round, Song finally managed to get out of the clinch. Both fighters returned to their space and looked a bit tired. In the middle of the round, Song landed more punches and some solid strikes. Glenn tried to clinch and looked a bit desperate, but Song was able to keep his distance and take his opponent down.
Ricky went for a desperate single leg attempt, which Kenan blocked. Ricky turned it into a body lock and was able to pull Song back into the clinch, but Glenn couldn’t land anything meaningful there. After breaking out of the clinch, Kenan landed another great punch in a standing exchange with 30 seconds left in the round to end the round.
To start the second round, Glenn landed an inside leg kick and narrowly avoided a head kick from his opponent. Song landed two hard kicks to the body, forcing Glenn to punch. Song blocked this punch and the one that followed, and landed a hard 1-2 combination against the fence – one of the cleanest shots of the fight. Glenn clearly reacted to the punch and began to lower his head. Ricky weathered the brief storm and clinched against the fence.
When the two men returned to their space, Glenn’s face was a mess. Ricky went back into the clinch, but this time an elbow from Song caused him to break away again. Seconds later, Song was back with a multi-strike combination, hurting his opponent from all angles. With nearly a minute left in the round, Kenan fended off another half-hearted takedown attempt. Song couldn’t afford to miss a punch, and he kept his hands down while fending off desperate takedown attempts until the end of the round.
As the final round began, a huge hematoma on Ricky’s forehead was clearly visible. Song charged at Glenn, taking him down with short, brutal punches, elbow combinations and a hip toss. Ricky was able to get to his feet but was hit with a knee. As Glenn broke free, he went for a double leg against the cage but missed. As the two fighters returned to space, Song placed his hands at his sides. Glenn attempted another takedown and was hit with a well-timed knee to the body on his way in. Song was using it all in space: side kicks, single punches, combos.
With two minutes left in the round, Ricky went on the offensive, landing a few strikes, only to be stung again by Song. Kenan landed a light jumping knee, but Glenn shook his head and kept moving forward. With one minute left in the bout, Song landed a partial head kick as Ricky continued to come forward with looping strikes. With 24 seconds left in the bout, Glenn was poked in the eye by Song, briefly stopping the fight. As the fighters resumed fighting, Glenn charged into the clinch and pushed Song against the cage. Song fought back with short punches and elbows, knocking Glenn out of the clinch and putting an exclamation point on his performance as the final bell sounded.
Official result: Song Kenan defeats Ricky Glenn via unanimous decision (30-27, 20-26, 29-28)
