Two women rising through the strawweight ranks, Jacqueline Amorim and Vanessa Demopoulos, fought to extend their respective win streaks to three at UFC Las Vegas 97 on Saturday night.
Amorim (8-1) came into the bout on the back of a two-fight win streak, having beaten Montserrat Conejo and Corey McKenna. The Brazilian strawweight was hoping to build on the momentum he gained from his win at UFC Las Vegas 97.
Demopoulos (11-5), coming off a tough split decision win over Emily Ducote in May and a decision win over Kanako Murata in October of last year, has a little more UFC experience than her opponent and could have made a big splash with an impressive win.
Saturday’s bout ended with a bit of controversy. Amorim opened the bout with a kick and then dodged a fan with a second kick. Demopoulos threw a kick but was caught, resulting in the first takedown of the bout. On his back, Demopoulos tried to push off the fence, but Amorim’s defensive grappling was flawless, repositioning both fighters at the center.
This allowed Amorim to posture up and land a few punches, progressing into mount position, or close to it, where Demopoulos managed to catch her leg. Vanessa, however, attempted a reverse, giving up her back in the process. Demopoulos then began to complain that Amorim’s hands were inside her gloves, but despite this, Amorim transitioned into an armbar, quickly forcing the tap. There was no review, the result stood, and Amorim was declared the winner.
Official result: Jacqueline Amorim defeats Vanessa Demopoulos by submission (armbar), 1st round, 3 minutes, 28 seconds
