The long-time light heavyweight champion returned at UFC 285 after a three-year hiatus, submitting Ciryl Gane in the first round to win the vacant heavyweight title in March 2023. “Bones” Jones was then scheduled to face Miocic at UFC 295 last November, but was forced to withdraw from the bout after suffering a torn pectoral muscle during training.
Meanwhile, Tom Aspinall won the interim heavyweight belt at UFC 295 with a first-round knockout of Sergey Pavlovic and defended it against Curtis Blaydes in July with a first-round knockout. While Aspinall has been pushing hard for a title unification bout, Jones has been pushing for a legendary bout with Miocic, and the promotion has agreed to his demands. Jones has also hinted at retiring after the Miocic fight.
Miocic, who holds the record for consecutive UFC heavyweight title defenses, has not stepped inside the Octagon since vacating the belt by second-round knockout to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 in March 2021.
