After an electric pay-per-view event in Salt Lake City, Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to UFC Apex for UFC Fight Night 244.
The highlight of the 12-bout card is a five-round flyweight bout between former title challenger Brandon Roybal and Tatsuro Hira. Both mixed martial artists competed under the weight limit of 126 pounds. However, the rest of the card was less professional. Three fighters missed the weigh-in: Jared Gooden was 1.5 pounds over the welterweight limit in his fight against Chidi Njokuani, Josh Fremd was 3 pounds over in his middleweight fight against Abdul Razak Alhassan, and Dan Argueta was timed at 2.5 pounds over flyweight. Against Lucas Rocha. Fremd vs. Alhassan was canceled as a result of a high weight error. Meanwhile, Gooden was fined 20% of his wallet, and Argueta was fined 20% as well.
This will be Roybal’s second UFC main event following a big split decision win over Brandon Moreno. ‘Raw Dawg’ has won four of his past five matches, with his only loss coming to champion Alexandre Pantoja. The 32-year-old aims to remain a top contender and has officially weighed in at 125.5 pounds heading into the fight.
Meanwhile, this will be the biggest test of Taira’s career (16-0). The undefeated fighter recently defeated Alex Perez and Carlos Hernandez and has a perfect record so far inside the Octagon. The 24-year-old is looking to stake his claim and claim a title shot with two consecutive wins on the UFC card. Taira stepped on the scale at 125.5 pounds.
UFC Fight Night 244 will air in its entirety on ESPN+ on Saturday. The main card begins at 7pm ET/4pm PT, with prelims kicking off at 4pm ET/1pm PT.
