The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to New York with a heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Jon Jones and the returning Stipe Miocic.
As expected, both fighters for the UFC 309 main event came within the 265-pound weight limit. Jones will be a smaller fighter as Miocic weighed in at 248.6 pounds compared to the champion’s 237.6 pounds. All of the other fighters made the cut except for James Rontop, who entered his 165-pound catchweight fight with Mauricio Luffy at 1.2 pounds overweight. The dispute will continue and Mr. Lontop will be fined a percentage of his wallet.
Jones (27-1, No. 1 North Carolina) is currently on a five-fight winning streak after his second win over Daniel Cormier was overturned due to a failed drug test. “Bones” won the vacant heavyweight title with a guillotine choke over Cyril Gane in just over two minutes. This will be the former light heavyweight champion’s second heavyweight bout.
Meanwhile, this will be Miocic’s first fight since he was knocked out by Francis Ngannou in 2021 (20-4). The 42-year-old Firefighter previously had back-to-back title fights against Cormier. The former UFC heavyweight champion has victories over some of the division’s biggest names, including Ngannou, Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.
UFC 309’s ESPN+ pay-per-view begins at 10pm ET/7pm PT. Prelims begins at 6pm ET/3pm PT on ESPN+ and UFC Fight Pass, then moves to ESPNews and ESPN+ at 8pm ET/5pm PT .
