Jim Miller stepped into the Octagon for the 45th time at UFC 309 on Saturday, an absolutely incredible number and proving once again why ‘A-10’ is the Iron Man of the UFC.
On Saturday, Miller faced fellow veteran Damon Jackson, who was in his second stint in the UFC and coming off a loss to Chepe Mariscal. Jackson was looking to rejuvenate his career by moving up from featherweight.
The match started with both fighters in an open stance. Jackson landed great combinations early on, targeting his head and body and using his teep to keep Miller at bay. After spending some time in the clinch, Miller used a step-in elbow to slice Jackson between the eyes. As Miller began to find range for his left hand, Jackson went for a takedown, but Miller instinctively jumped into his patented guillotine and forced the tap out of Jackson. Jim Miller’s brief but classic performance as an A10 proves there’s still gas left in the tank.
After the loss, Jackson left his gloves in the cage. This is usually an act synonymous with retirement. Jon Anik stated on the broadcast that Jackson was offered an Octagon interview but declined.
Miller is long past his title run and hasn’t even sniffed the rankings, but he’s still one of the UFC’s most interesting draws as it’s always fun to watch him fight. He can fight anyone and people always tune in to watch him fight. In his post-match speech, he suggested he was ready to fight 50 matches during the promotional period.
Official result: Jim Miller decision. Damon Jackson, submission (guillotine choke), round 1, 2:44
