Lightweights Michael Johnson and Ottman Azaitar rounded out UFC Tampa’s preliminary card on Saturday.
Johnson, a longtime UFC veteran (in his 14th year this month), had won and lost his last five fights. Azaitar, on the other hand, had lost his last two matches and had his back against the wall.
The first few minutes of the opening match were spent with both fighters trying to compose themselves, aware of their opponent’s strength. Both men went to the body, but the kicks barely landed. Johnson took control of the center of the octagon, pushed Azaitar against the fence and hit a takedown, which the Moroccan easily stuffed. In the final moments of the round, Johnson landed a counter right hook, followed by a left hand that wobbled Azaitar. Thanks to that last exchange, Johnson was clearly 10-9.
To begin the second round, both fighters took another big swing. Azaitar began throwing several more kicks into the air to staple Johnson’s hands to his head. Azaitar lands on Johnson in a big exchange. Johnson must have thought he had caused more pain than he actually did. Because he advanced recklessly and was left helpless by Johnson’s strong counters. As a precaution, Johnson fired several more shots at Azaitar, who was unconscious.
The 42-fight veteran proved he’s not done yet with a vintage performance, ending the year with a 2-0 record in 2024.
Official result: Michael Johnson def. Ottman Azaitar by knockout (Round 2, 2:03)
