It’s no surprise that Tom Aspinall is in line for a heavyweight title unification fight with Jon Jones.
After enjoying some time off over the holidays, the interim heavyweight champion recently returned to the gym in preparation for a future matchup with Jones.
“Now I have to get back to reality and get back training for the biggest fight in MMA at the moment,” Aspinall said on his YouTube channel.
Aspinall has been lobbying for a title unification fight for months, long before Jones returned to action to dispatch Stipe Miocic with a third-round technical knockout at UFC 309 on Nov. 16. In the aftermath of the match, Jones hinted that he had a huge money offer. That way, you might be able to convince him to accept a fight with someone he has previously been reluctant to accept. As of now, Aspinall has no updates on the match negotiations other than what’s going on on his side – and of course, that’s the simple part.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any updates regarding the Jones fight. Right now we’re just waiting,” Aspinall said. “I said yes to the fight. Of course I agreed and that’s it. Now I’m just waiting for him. [for] The UFC will solve that. ”
Jones has also expressed further interest in a matchup with light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, but UFC CEO Dana White has virtually guaranteed that the ‘Bones’ vs. Aspinall bout will take place at some point in 2025. I am doing it.
Until that date is official, Aspinall will try to remain as sharp as possible.
I’m just training and focusing on everything to be as healthy and ready as possible. Because they might give me a date soon,” Aspinall said. “Or they might say that date is six months from now, I don’t know. But that happens all the time between games – you never know when the next game is going to be. There isn’t.”
