There are no more “Pitbull” brothers competing under the Pro Fighters League banner.
On Tuesday, Patricki Freire announced his release from the PFL, and the next day his contract with the fledgling Global Fight League became official. Freire confirmed the news after it was first reported by MMAFighting.com.
GFL plans to launch a team-based MMA format in April. The draft, which will select the fighters to represent each team (which includes Freire), is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. ET. In recent weeks, a number of prominent former champions and veterans have been reported to be involved with the organization.
Freire made two appearances in the PFL during the 2024 season, losing to Clay Corrado and Bruno Miranda. His older brother “Pitbull” is best known for his long run in Bellator MMA, where he enjoyed a brief reign as lightweight champion. During his time with Bellator, Freire defeated the likes of Benson Henderson, Josh Thomson, and Roger Huerta.
“former [Bellator] Lightweight champion, most wins in the lightweight division, and most knockouts in company history,” Freire wrote on social media. “I will never forget all of the great moments I had with this organization, and some of the fun battles. [with] PFL. I can’t wait to see what happens next. ”
Patricio Freire has likely found a new home in MMA, but Patricio Freire’s next move remains to be seen. The former Bellator featherweight champion was cleared in PFL release week after repeatedly expressing dissatisfaction with the promotion.
