Oscar De La Hoya is worried about Mike Tyson and has harshly criticized Jake Paul’s decision to fight the boxing legend.
Paul vs. Tyson is scheduled for an exhibition match on July 20th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and will be broadcast on Netflix.
A major world title fight has been added to the card, further enhancing the summer event.
Fans and critics alike have criticized the matchup between the 27-year-old and the 57-year-old, including De La Hoya.
Ahead of this weekend’s Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia, De La Hoya appeared on Ariel Helwani’s “The MMA Hour.”
He shared his thoughts on his working relationship with Garcia and was also asked about Tyson’s return to the sport.
‘Golden Boy’ chastised Paul for facing ‘iron’ Mike rather than a ranked boxer, and questioned Paul’s desire to become world champion.
“Actually, I like Jake Paul, what he’s doing and the attention he’s bringing to this sport and how he wants to work with his promotional company to help fighters. That…I love that,” he began.

De La Hoya added, “But he also talks about being a world champion and taking it seriously. Well, this is not serious, it’s a fight with Mike Tyson.”
“Yes, I understand it’s a lot of money…it’ll get a lot of attention…
“The only criticism I have of Jake Paul is that if you want to take this sport seriously, you should follow the path of a world champion.
“Top 20, Top 10, Top 5 Battle [opponents] And ultimately it becomes a duty to become a world champion. That’s what we do. It’s not about fighting Tyson, it’s how he earns respect from fight fans. ”
De La Hoya, who is several years younger than the former world heavyweight champion, is also concerned about Tyson’s health in the fight against Paul.
“I’m worried about Tyson because we all love him and he’s 57 years old,” he continued. “He’s certainly not a spring chicken.”
