On May 4th, Canelo Alvarez will defend his undisputed super middleweight title against Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas. Ahead of the fight, Munguia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya predicted the potential outcome of Munguia vs. Alvarez. He felt Alvarez could suffer the same fate that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. suffered in the 1998 match against De La Hoya.
After Isaac Cruz’s win over Rolando Romero earlier this month, Oscar De La Hoya told FightHype that there are some “young lions” right behind Canelo Alvarez. In that regard, speaking of Alvarez vs. Munguia on May 4, De La Hoya was even hoping for a “torch relay.” Now, on The MMA Hour, De La Hoya reiterated his own views. The CEO of Golden Boy Promotions began by saying, “I think it might be a changing of the guard.”
“Look at Canelo, who I respect as a fighter. But look at his career. And the decline has been slow. He’s had knee and shoulder surgery. He’s in 60 fights. He started playing professionally at the age of 15. You can see the wear and tear,” De La Hoya added.

Along these lines, De La Hoya mentioned his fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. In 1998, 25-year-old De La Hoya faced 36-year-old Cesar Chavez Jr. for the WBC welterweight title. De La Hoya was 28-0-0, while Cesar Chavez was 100-2-2! However, the 25-year-old De La Hoya was able to stop the 36-year-old Chavez Jr. in the eighth round.
In this regard, the 51-year-old said: “Mungia is 27 years old. Canelo is 35, 34 years old. [Alvarez is 33]. So maybe this is a changing of the guard. This could be De La Hoya [and] Chavez again. It happens all the time in sports. It’s just a young fighter coming in and taking on a veteran. So we know it’s going to be May 4th. ” Meanwhile, De La Hoya also explained how Munguia can beat Canelo.
Oscar De La Hoya thinks Jaime Munguia needs to study Canelo Alvarez’s footwork
Oscar De La Hoya says the 27-year-old’s legs are “fresher” because Jaime Munguia is younger than Canelo Alvarez. Plus, De La Hoya believes Jaime can take a punch. As a result, the 51-year-old feels Munguia will be able to outsmart Canelo with his “jabs and combinations” if the fight goes to 12 rounds. “Look at Canelo’s footwork. Of course, as I’ve said all along, he moves like he’s on quicksand,” De La Hoya said.
“So if you study his footwork, you can easily win that fight. Every time Canelo comes forward, you know he’s going to throw something,” De La Hoya added. Ta. “I’m going to go to Munguia’s camp and help him and give him advice. A lot of things are going our way and Munguia’s way and that gives him a chance to win this game. It has the potential to give,” he concluded. That being said, do you think Jaime Munguia vs. Canelo Alvarez will replicate Oscar De La Hoya vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.?
