Top 15 light heavyweight Ryan Spann will attempt to defend his ranking against Uzbekistan’s Bogdan Guskov in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 91 on Saturday.
Guskov lost early in his debut, but bounced back with a KO in the first round and landed this shot against #11 Span, who was looking for a comeback after two consecutive losses. He was on the back foot and lost in the first round, but came back in the second round and completely defeated Span.
The two prolific finishers were ready to roll up their punches and swing as they probed their range and opponent. One minute in, Ryan Spann gets a takedown and reaches the waist, but is stuffed. He inadvertently hit him in the groin and the match was temporarily stopped, but then the referee returned the match to the fence. However, Ryan Spann punched Guskov in the groin again, this time more directly. Guskov had no problem continuing to fight, but two illegal blows in a few seconds was pretty bad. Bogdan didn’t seem to mind when the referee gave Spann a warning. Ryan got to his feet and landed a few shots, then got a double underhook and seized the opportunity to move forward for a takedown.
Spann dominates on the ground and passes to the back, aiming for a rear naked choke. Although not getting very close, he choked and exhausted Guskov. He flattened the boggan, took some good hits, and stayed in the back until the end of the round.
Everything changed in the second round when Guskov caught Spann with multiple right hands, nearly dropping him and forcing Ryan to shoot for his legs. Once on his feet, Spann charged forward with big shots of his own, probably overswinging, but hitting Guskov himself several times cleanly. Bogdan’s chin proved to be incredibly good, absorbing several shots with ease. With two minutes left, Guskov landed a monster right uppercut, swarmed Span as he fell, and forced him out cold with ground and pound.
