It looks like the highly anticipated Ultimate Fighting Championship event at The Sphere will feature some competitors.
According to a report from ESPN, Canelo Alvarez is finalizing the deal to defend his super middleweight title against Edgar Berlanga at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 14. Meanwhile, UFC 306 (also known as Noche UFC) is scheduled to take place at The Sphere in Las Vegas on the same day.
Alvarez is widely considered boxing’s biggest star and has headlined Mexico’s Independence Day fight cards six times. The native of Guadalajara, Mexico, has held titles at 154, 160 and 175 pounds and has won his last four bouts.
UFC 304: Edwards vs. Muhammad, Saturday at 10 pm ET on ESPN+. Order now! While no fighter on the UFC 306 card is expected to match the star power of Alvarez, UFC CEO Dana White has repeatedly touted the event as a can’t-miss attraction.
“I’ve already put $17 million into this business, and we’re not even close to September yet,” White said during a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“… I’m only going to go once, for one night, and I’m never going again. That’s why I keep telling everybody, it’s going to be the most unique, the best, the most amazing show that the world of sports has ever seen.”
No official announcement has been made yet, but UFC Noche is expected to headline the event with a bantamweight title fight between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili, while Mexican star Alexa Grasso is expected to defend her strawweight belt against Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event. The remaining 10 bouts feature a number of fighters with Mexican ties.
