Bubba Jenkins (21-8) is looking to finish in the first round to qualify for the 2024 Professional Fighters League Playoffs.
Jenkins is scheduled to face Brazilian prospect Gabriel Bulaga (13-1) in a featherweight showdown during the 2024 PFL 6 regular season on Friday, June 28 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Jenkins began his 2024 season this April against Kai Kamaka III with the PFL veteran’s first loss in four years, while his opponent had a stellar start to the season, knocking out Justin Gonzalez with a first-round buzzer-beater on the same card to earn six points.
Jenkins has made it to the playoffs every season so far and is now eager to secure a first-round victory over Bulaga to maintain his place in the competition. Jenkins has two successful first-round submissions during his time in the PFL, both via rear-naked choke, and is looking to make his third.
“Six. Six fast. I need it. I need it,” Jenkins said at PFL media day. “I’m fighting a guy who has six points. Unfortunately, I have to take this win away from someone I know very well.”
“The training is exactly the same, but the mindset is different. There’s no time to game plan, long-term strategy for the fight. You go in, you finish the fight, you either get a TKO as quickly as possible, get the ref to stop it, or you lock up a submission and walk away from it. I’ve had guys submit in the first round a couple of times and I’ve been able to finish them six times quickly, so I’m just trying to take my chance the third time around and move on. The fact that I’m a playoff Jenkins and I’m at a bit of a disadvantage makes me nervous and a little frustrated.”
The format of the PFL tournament is that fighters advance to a playoff based on points earned in two regular season bouts: three points are awarded for each win, with up to three extra points awarded for final results, three bonus points are awarded for final results in the first round, two points for final results in the second round, and one point for final results in the third round.
