New UFC welterweight contenders Carlos Prates and Charles Radke faced off on Saturday night in Louisville.
Both fighters were looking to remain undefeated at UFC at the expense of the other. Radke won his first two UFC opponents last year, while Prates had recently knocked out Trevin Giles in his debut. Both fighters have finishing power, and this bout had the potential to be exciting. Prates was considered the favorite going into the bout, and when the action settled down, that proved to be the right call.
At the start of the fight, Radke came forward and pounced on Prates. He pushed Carlos against the fence and landed some short strikes, but a takedown attempt was prevented. But after that, “Chuck Buffalo” had a hard time getting close to Prates. The Brazilian’s length allowed him to always stay at a comfortable distance, chipping away at Radke with kicks. But Carlos’s weak punching power meant that Charles continued to take just as much damage as he did. That is, until the final minute, when Prates really started to step up his attack.
He gained momentum as he tumbled down the hill, and in the final 15 seconds of the first round, Carlos Plates landed a perfect knee to Radtke’s liver. Plates walked away with no further thought and began celebrating his victory before the referee intervened.
Prates now improves to 2-0 in the UFC and pushes Radke to 2-1.
Official result: Carlos Prates defeats Charles Radke by TKO (knee), 1st round, 4:47
