On a night of seven finishes, the best on a fight night card in a long time, UFC Vegas 100 concluded with welterweights Carolos Prates and Neil Magny.
Magny, 37, held several welterweight records, primarily for most wins and most fights at welterweight. Prates, 31, wasn’t exactly a kid, but he’s still in his prime and looking to make his mark on the division and the UFC as a whole.
On Saturday, Neil Magny wasted no time in executing his game plan, grabbing his leg from a level change and forcing Preitz to jump against the fence. But when he was on the ground, Carlos Prates moved up and looked for elbows and hard punches. Still, Prates chose to step back, standing up and allowing Magny to stand. In the next clinch, Magny tried to land a right hand and trip, but Prates remained standing.
Magny was like a dog with a bone when it came to takedown attempts and just refused to let go. However, towards the end of the round, Prates rocked Magny with an elbow and Magny fell on his butt. Then he stood up, and Magny, like a fawn on skates, staggered around the octagon, clinging to his feet one last time. There was no takedown, but Magny was able to get some recovery time. It wasn’t enough in the end, but a few seconds later Preetz dropped Magny with a glancing connecting blow. Still, Magny went down, cutting Prates in the waist in the process, and remained face down and staring out for a significant amount of time while Carlos Prates was announced as the winner.
