Alex Pereira needs time off to heal from a lingering injury.
Pereira (12-2) defended his light heavyweight title for the third time by defeating Khalil Rountree (13-6) in the main event of UFC 307 on Saturday. By stopping three challengers in 175 days, Pereira broke Ronda Rousey’s record for fastest time between three consecutive defenses (189 days). After a tough camp and several injury flare-ups, the currently most active champion on the roster is ready to take some time off after his win over “War Horse.”
In addition to his much-awaited vacation, Pereira also plans to travel around the world during his vacation. The Brazilian spoke about his upcoming break after his win in the UFC:
Pereira said: “I think I was able to get some rest after this and I think I deserve it. I’m not going to say anything, but the team and the organization, because of what happened during camp, this is the hardest for me. I know it’s one of those camps.” …Right now I want to rest my body. I’m going to Mexico, I’m going to Malta, and I’m going to spend some time in Bali. ”
Pereira also revealed details of a harsh camp marred by multiple issues. In addition to having trouble obtaining a visa, the light heavyweight champion suffered from a severe fever and suffered from injuries that resurfaced several times in the lead up to the main attraction. Pereira said in the post-match media scrum.
“The battle was really tough,” admitted “Poitin.” “But only my team really knows how hard this camp has been. We went through a lot that no one knows about. So I was in Brazil a month ago. Visa-wise. There were some issues. I was going to the consulate every day to make sure my passport was ready to be picked up. I finally got back to the US and spent about a week here in Connecticut. But during that time I was on antibiotics. [a] I had a fever and felt unwell. [sore] I had a lot of things going on with my throat and stuff. Going back to the topic, I injured my ribs when I was in Brazil. It was an injury that I had about a year ago and it came back… and the ligament in my toe that I hurt at UFC 300 came back as well. So I experienced a lot at this camp. ”
