Chris Weidman’s lingering foot injury is looking better than ever heading into UFC 309.
Weidman is scheduled to fight Eric Anders at UFC 309 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. This will be Weidman’s third appearance since returning from a broken leg suffered against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 in 2021. When Hall checked for a leg kick, Weidman’s shin was split in half, resulting in an immediate stoppage.
Weidman dropped a unanimous decision against Brad Tavares, who returned to the Octagon after a more than two-year hiatus, at UFC 292 last year. The All-American then bounced back with a controversial technical decision victory over Bruno Silva. Although Weidman had the lead on the scorecards, Silva was unable to continue midway through the third round after Weidman hit him in the eye multiple times.
Weidman, 40, knows he is nearing retirement and is taking it one fight at a time. The former middleweight champion had a great camp leading up to UFC 309, and his injured leg is feeling better than ever. UFC 309: Jones vs. Miocic. Saturday at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN+. Order now!
“Man. I’m 40 years old. I can’t go on any longer,” Weidman recently told ESPN. “Honestly, I’m just going to take it one fight at a time. I had to see how my body felt, so you never know. I felt really good this camp. Some things. But then everything came together. I felt so much better, and I felt so much better. There are things that hold you back, but there are always hidden blessings. Like my legs, which I’ve struggled with for almost four years, are much better than they were before. I’m very happy to be able to stand on my toes again, as it was difficult for me to do so for a while.”
Weidman aims to show his best version at UFC 309 and believes he will have an easy night at the office if he does.
“I really want to go out and put on a show…just be great and show the best version of yourself,” he said. “And just do what I know I can do and completely destroy him…I think I’m going to make it look really easy wherever I am.”
