Two of the most experienced UFC bantamweights faced off on Saturday night when Canada’s Chad Andherriger and Cody Gibson faced off at UFC Edmonton.
Angheriger (13-7) fought on his home turf in March with a decision victory over Charampos Grigoriou. This victory ended a two-game losing streak and likely saved his spot on the roster. He was looking for his second straight victory against Gibson.
Gibson (20-10) had a 2-5 record in the UFC, coming off a submission victory over Brian Kelleher in July. He was looking to improve his promotion record against Andheriger.
In the first round, Gibson used his height and length to shoot smartly. Angeliger met him with his own game plan, but loaded with right hands. He coaxed Gibson to come forward and fired his right hand like a missile.
Gibson defeated Angeliger and went on top for land damage. Angeliger lay on his back and opted for a heel strike to Gibson’s left calf. Angeliger avoided major damage and got back to his feet, but was quickly sent back to the mat.
The round ended with Gibson going for a Dulce choke, but time ran out.
Round 2 Gibson realized he had the upper hand on the ground and immediately shot for a takedown, which he quickly secured. He opted for a body shot with Angeliger covering his head. Angeliger tried to get behind him and make a scramble, but ended up getting mounted. Gibson attempted two arm triangles, but the very tough Angeliger was able to defend and escape those submissions.
The round ended with Gibson on the back foot and Angeliger looking for an answer for the third round.
Round 3 Angeliger was more aggressive, knowing he was losing two rounds. Throwing a big shot and hitting Gibson may have upset him, but he ultimately defeated Angela Liger and dominated the remaining rounds in the grappling department.
Official Results: Cody Gibson def. Chad Angeliger, unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)
