Trainer Robert Garcia believes Devin Haney should make an easy adjustment if he chooses to fight before the end of the year.
Robert said Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) will have a tough fight against Sander Martin, who is next in a must-see WBC spot, as he needs to slowly come back from last Saturday night’s loss to Ryan Garcia. I don’t think it should be defended or defended.
Robert believes Haney has a chance to win in a rematch with Ryan, but he will have to wait until next summer to fight again. He needs a good game plan and good sparring to prepare.
Ryan dropped Haney six times in the fight, but the referee only counted three of them, and there is no doubt that he could have stopped the fight in the seventh round when he was in serious trouble.
First tune-up fight
“If he gets a tune-up fight before the end of the year, he could get away with it. But he shouldn’t have a big solid fight or a rematch,” trainer Robert Garcia told FightHub TV. Haney said he should refrain from a rematch with Ryan Garcia or against a higher-level fighter.
The World Boxing Council will have to give Haney permission to avoid his overdue fight with Sander Martin so he can take part in the tune-up bout he was supposed to compete in next. If Haney asks the WBC to make an exception, it likely will.
In the end, Haney was allowed to retain the title after losing to Ryan. They were supposed to strip Haney and leave the WBC title vacant, but Haney was allowed to retain the title. This move gave fans the impression that the WBC was doing Haney a favor.
“The rematch should happen next summer. If he fights before the end of the year, it should be an easy fight. It’s still a very competitive and close fight. It won’t be an easy fight for Ryan either.” Robert said of next year’s rematch between Haney and Garcia.
“I think Devin can win in the rematch, but it’s going to be a smart fight, a good training camp, good sparring and coming up with a good game plan.”
What remains of Haney’s weak punch resistance could be shot after last Saturday’s bout with Ryan. He was already unstable since his fight against Jorge Linares in 2021, but it may be even worse now.
In the rematch, Haney won’t be able to avoid Ryan’s powerful, restraining left hook and will likely fall apart as soon as he gets hit.
“If the opponent doesn’t make weight in a title fight and loses the fight, the title should be vacated,” Robert said. “That’s always been the case. If it’s a title fight, it only mattered to Haney because Haney is the champion.
“If I lose, I’m no longer the champion. The title was supposed to be vacant. I want to slowly come back with Haynes without the title.
