Kaito Oda is posing a potential problem for other contenders in the ONE Championship flyweight division.
The 26-year-old Japanese prospect used multiple takedowns, brutal control and a flurry of ground-and-pound to defeat previously unbeaten Ngoc Luong Tran by unanimous decision on Friday at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand at ONE Friday Fights 67. All three ringside judges had their scorecards in favor of Oda (5-1, 2-0 ONE), who is riding a four-fight win streak.
Tran (4-1, 0-1 ONE) faced danger wherever he turned. Oda took down Tran with a clean one-two in the first round, then powered into top position, racking up points with punches and hammer fists. When Tran rose to his feet and tried to clinch, he was met with close-range elbows and shoulder strikes. Oda showed off his superior wrestling and grappling as time went on. The Carpe Diem Fukuoka representative landed multiple takedowns and fearlessly probed Tran’s guard, buying time for him. Oda got into full mount in the third round, threatening an arm triangle choke and then going on the offensive again when the finish failed. At that point, the outcome was long gone.
