On Saturday, UFC 305’s televised prelims began with featherweight bouts between Jack Jenkins and Herbert Burns.
Burns was in a tough spot coming into the bout having lost three straight fights, while Jenkins was 2-1 under the UFC banner and coming off a loss to Chepe Mariscal.
The fight started with Burns landing a couple of quick kicks. They traded jabs. Jenkins was able to knock his opponent’s head back with his jab and had some success. Jack started to let his hands go a little more before he was hit with a hard leg kick. Jenkins landed a big hook nearly 90 seconds into the round. A few seconds later, a hook to the body from Jenkins sent his opponent back.
As Herbert moved to his back foot, Jack began to loosen his grip a little. Jenkins got to Burns’ body and then moved up. Burns was on the ground less than two minutes into the round. Upon getting to his feet, Jenkins began to bombard Burns with boxing combos. With 70 seconds left in the round, Herbert scored a decisive double leg takedown in the center of the Octagon to halt the onslaught. Burns didn’t do much else of note other than recovering with the takedown and waited out the rest of the round on top.
At the start of the second round, Burns landed several leg kicks and desperately went for a takedown. Jenkins defended the takedown and resumed his attack with his jab. Burns also tried to find a rhythm with his jab and scored a low takedown about a minute into the round. Burns was briefly able to attempt an arm triangle before jumping for a heel hook as Jack tried to get to his feet. Jenkins was able to escape and a defeated Herbert eventually had to get to his feet again.
Just seconds later, Burns made another desperate takedown attempt that was thwarted. Jenkins got on top and landed some light punches on the ground. With nearly 90 seconds left in the round, Jenkins landed another textbook boxing combination, sending Burns down against the fence. As the fight went to the ground, Jenkins again stopped his attack, repeatedly getting Burns to his feet. By this point, Herbert was limping from a leg kick to the calf, and with just seconds left in the round, he was throwing punches in desperation to the boos of the crowd.
At the start of the final round, Herbert again landed a punch and attempted a takedown, but gave up and drove his knee into Jenkins’ cup. After a brief pause, the fight resumed. Jenkins again went for the calf, then blinded Burns with a jab. Jack finished his combo with a hard right that nearly slammed Herbert’s face into the ground. Jack returned for a few seconds of hard ground and pound, then stepped back to allow Herbert to stand. Burns tried to get to his feet, but fell backwards as the referee stopped the fight.
In a post-fight interview, Jack Jenkins called for Gavin Tucker to fight on November 2nd in Edmonton, Canada.
