Jamahal Hill recently recalled a funny exchange he had with Weili Zhang.
Hill recently competed on Dana White’s Contender Series where she ran into the women’s strawweight champion. Currently recovering from a knee injury, “Sweet Dreams” was surprised when Chan wished her luck in her bout next month. When Chan clarified that it was a title fight, Hill realized that Chan had mistaken her for Khali Rountree Jr. Rountree will challenge Alex Pereira for the light heavyweight title in the main event of UFC 307, which takes place on October 5 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Rountree is a fairly short guy with a beard, so Hill was surprised by “Magnum’s” confusion, but the former light heavyweight champion knows Chan didn’t mean it to be disrespectful.
“Weili came up to me last week on Contender Series and was like, ‘Let’s go next month,'” Hill recently told Aljamain Sterling’s YouTube channel. “I was like, ‘What?’ She was like, ‘Oh, you’re fighting for the title,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, she thinks I’m Khalil. I don’t have any facial hair. He has beard. He’s 6 feet but he’s a lot shorter. But it was funny. She’s a sweet person. She’s not gonna let it get to her, so it’s fine.”
Hill was originally scheduled to face Rountree at UFC 303 in June, but was suspended for failing a drug test and replaced by Carlos Ulberg. Hill then withdrew from the bout due to injury and was replaced by Anthony Smith. Ulberg then withdrew for an undisclosed reason and was replaced by Roman Dolidze, who beat Smith by unanimous decision. Hill has also said he will be at the Pereira vs. Rountree title fight at UFC 307.
Hill won the vacant light heavyweight title at UFC 283 in January 2023, defeating Glover Teixeira by unanimous decision. However, six months later, he tore his Achilles tendon during a basketball game and had to vacate the belt. Hill returned to the ring at UFC 300 in April this year, losing by first-round knockout in the title bout against “Poitan,” but did not win the title. However, the finish was somewhat controversial, as referee Herb Dean intervened just before Pereira fended off a low blow and was about to land the knockout punch.
