Canada’s Jasmine Jasdavicius and Ariane da Silva faced off in a flyweight ranking bout Saturday at Rogers Place at UFC Edmonton.
Jasdavicius, who is ranked 14th in the division, was aiming for her third consecutive win (three wins in 2024) against Da Silva, who is ranked 13th and is known as the “Queen of Violence.”
Aryan tried to find his range early on, throwing leg kicks and boxing combinations just out of reach. Both fighters seemed a little nervous in the initial exchange. Da Silva clipped Jasmine with a straight right and the difference in power was immediately apparent. Jasmine landed a skipping leg kick and faked a level change midway through the round, but got a big reaction from her opponent. After a few seconds, Jasudavicius pretended to grab the leg and tried to throw a punch of his own. Jasmine started to move forward and put pressure on the front. Da Silva energized her with boxing combinations punctuated with head kicks, which got a huge reaction from the crowd. Jasdavicius landed a head kick and grabbed his leg, knocking his opponent down. Da Silva immediately rolled and attacked the legs. Jasmine rained down strikes and landed some good ones on her opponent before the round ended.
Both fighters opened up at the start of the second round. Da Silva continued to land sharper blows, snapping Jasmine’s head back. Just over a minute into the round, Jasmine landed a well-timed single leg takedown. Once on the ground, Jasdavicius quickly moved into side control and fired a sharp short shot to Aryan’s face. With a minute left in the round, Jasmine added more strikes. Da Silva managed to make it to the end of the round, but just as the timer went off, he developed a nasty lump on his forehead.
The final round began with da Silva throwing long boxing combinations while keeping his hands very low and his hips back. Jasdavicius waited until about a minute into the round and was able to get his opponent back to the ground midway through with one of da Silva’s combination shots. Ariane didn’t really seem to have an answer for Jasmine as she struggled on the ground. About halfway through the round, Jasmine expertly transitioned into a dulce choke. Da Silva found his feet and had no choice but to tap.
In the post-match interview, Jasmine was clearly overjoyed and talked about how happy she was to get the win and be on the main card in front of her home fans. “This is one of my favorite chokes,” Jasmine said when asked if she knew the anaconda choke was her opponent’s weakness. And when asked who she would like to fight after this big victory in ranked matches, Jasmine answered, “Who would win?” And she said she was on a mission to the belt.
