Islam Makhachev has confirmed that Khabib Nurmagomedov will be in his corner for his next title fight.
Makhachev (25-1) will defend his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier (30-8) in the main event of UFC 302 on June 1 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. While Makhachev has been spotted training with Nurmagomedov ahead of UFC 302, there has been no confirmation until now if “The Eagle” will be appearing on the card. However, Makhachev has made it clear that Nurmagomedov will be in his corner for the pay-per-view bout, and he is thrilled: “The Eagle has arrived in Jersey City. He’s in my corner. I’m very happy, honestly. He’s one of the best corners, he’s a coach, he’s a brother, he’s a friend. That’s it.”
ORDER NOW! UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier, Saturday at 10 PM ET on ESPN+ Nurmagomedov retired from competition after defending his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in 2020 following the death of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. “The Eagle” appeared to take his father’s place since then, mentoring and cornering his friend and teammate. However, Nurmagomedov claimed he was leaving the sport for good in January 2023, one month before Makhachev defends his title against Alexander Volkanovski. UFC 302 will mark Nurmagomedov’s first appearance at an Ultimate Fighting Championship event since then.
