The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns as the first mixed martial arts event of the year. The main event of UFC Vegas 101 features a five-round strawweight battle between Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Rivas. The two fighters on the undercard did not succeed in making weight, but the two women did. First up was Jose Johnson, who entered his fight against Felipe Bunes at 2.5 pounds over the flyweight limit. Ihor Potieria is also overweight, coming into his middleweight fight with Marco Tullio at two pounds over the limit. As a result, both fighters will be fined a percentage of their purse.
Dern (14-5), a fan favorite inside the Octagon, enters the bout coming off a win over Lupita Godinez. The American fighter’s losing streak ended at two after losing to Amanda Lemos and Jessica Andrade. The decorated grappler has significant wins over Angela Hill, Tecia Pennington, and Nina Nunes. When the 31-year-old stepped on the scale, he weighed exactly 116 pounds.
Meanwhile, Rivas (13-5) will be looking to bounce back from his loss to Rose Namajunas. Prior to the setback, the Brazilian had won two of her last three matches, including victories over Luana Pinheiro and Vivian Araujo. The 31-year-old officially weighed in at 116 pounds for her second UFC main event.
UFC Vegas 101 will be broadcast live in its entirety on ESPN+ on Saturday. Preliminaries begin at 4:00 PM ET/1:00 PM PT, and the main card begins at 7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT.
