Tullio vs. Potieria, UFC Vegas 101 Weighing Credit: Eddie Law/Cageside Press
One of the five fighters to debut at UFC Vegas 101 on Saturday was Marco Tullio, who faced Ihor Potieria in a middleweight bout.
At least it would have been a middleweight fight had Potieria not weighed too much when he stepped on the scale on weigh-in day. The bout was instead held at a catchweight of 188 pounds, with Potieria spitting out some of his purse on his opponent.
The battle began with Tulio assuming the role of the initial attacker. While Potieria moved forward, it was Torio who was able to successfully attack, but for the first few minutes he was unable to make any clean decisions. Torio did land some sharp counters, but the most notable moments early on were a brief clash of heads and an accidental groin attack that stopped him. The worst part was when his knee landed hard under his belt, leaving Ihor sprawled on the ground in obvious pain.
Potieria, who took time to recover, resumed and landed a big left hand. However, Torio glanced at his right hand and exploded it forward, then followed up with his right and dropped the potieria. Sensing the finish, Torio swarmed him with ground and pound, leaving Potieria bloodied and forcing the referee to issue a TKO stoppage.
Fouls aside, it was a big UFC debut for Marco Tullio.
Official result: Marco Tullio def. Ihor Potieria TKO (punch and GNP), round 1, 3:04
