Legendary boxer Mike Tyson needs to recover before he can return to the ring again.
Tyson (50-6, 2 NC, 44 KOs) was scheduled to face Jake Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) in a fixed professional boxing bout on July 20th. The two were expected to meet at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. However, Tyson developed health issues with an ulcer during his flight on Sunday and medical professionals had to treat him. This forced Tyson to stop training for several weeks until he was recovered and able to train without restrictions. As a result, the event has been postponed to a future date, to be announced on June 7th.
The fight, and likely the rest of the card, will take place in the same building, and Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions announced in a press release that all tickets already purchased will be honored and refunds will be available to those who wish to receive them.
“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time,” the soon-to-be 58-year-old said in a statement. “Unfortunately, my ulcer has recurred and my doctors have instructed me to take a few weeks off training to rest and recover. My body is in the best shape it has been since the 1990s and I will be back on a full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought me some time, but in the end I will be knocked out and banned from boxing for good. I thank everyone for their patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
Paul also issued a brief statement saying he would have no problem postponing the fight until Tyson is free to train.
“I fully support postponing the event so that Mike Tyson has no excuses on fight day. My fans know I wouldn’t want to fight ‘Iron Mike’ at anything other than his best, but let me be clear: when he steps in the ring with me, I will be ready to ‘win’ with a sensational finish. Paul vs. Tyson will be a fight that will go down in history, and I promise to give my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup,” Paul said.
It’s unclear at this time whether the four remaining bouts on the undercard will go ahead with the postponed dates. Co-headliner Katie Taylor was scheduled to defend her lightweight belt against Amanda Serrano. Other bouts include Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. set to face Darren Till in a cruiserweight bout, lightweights Ashton Silve and Floyd Schofield expected to clash, and Neeraj Goyat scheduled to face Winderson Nunes in a four-round middleweight bout.
