Ian Machado Garry has found the perfect path to winning his first career title.
The Irish superstar doesn’t disrupt the polarization in MMA. Obviously, Conor McGregor is in his own stratosphere when it comes to his personality, and Garry, who is undefeated at 14-0, is either loved or hated throughout the community.
Often hanging out on the other side of that fence is Garry’s welterweight contender, Colby Covington. Thanks to his personal digs, Covington, who is brash and often outspoken in the most undignified of ways, has been a fighter since his unanimous decision loss to champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in December. continues to send verbal missiles at The path is now open for Covington vs. Gary. They just need to make it official.
“I made it very clear that I want Colby next. He has no other choice,” Garry told Genting Casino. “This is the biggest match he can do, the biggest match I can do right now. So let’s do it, let’s put on a show, let me wipe the floor with him, and I’ll give him forever.” I will retire.”
“Let’s hope he signs a contract because the UFC seems to want that and it looks like they’re moving in the right direction. I agreed to fight Colby, but at this point Colby has not agreed. and have not signed a contract.”
In other news, the long-awaited matchup between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler is finally official. UFC CEO Dana White announced the fights at UFC 300 this weekend, coinciding with UFC 303 taking place in Las Vegas on June 29 during International Fight Week.
Garry, who has admired McGregor throughout his career, believes there is no better place for a possible fight against Covington than right before the big comeback of “The Notorious.”
“That will be my goal, to see the McGregor vs. Chandler main event and the Ian Machado-Garry co-main event,” Garry said. “I think it would be a phenomenal card.
“I look up to Conor as a role model and an inspiration who proved that anyone can achieve their dreams. He showed me that you can be a UFC champion and you can do anything you dream of. We grew up very close in Dublin and we’re both on similar paths. Obviously, he’s made it and now it’s my turn to do it.
“I don’t understand why the UFC isn’t doing this,” he continued. “I spoke to [UFC CBO] hunter [Campbell] For that matter, when this opportunity comes, this has to happen. If Conor is fighting, put me on the same card. I’ll be there. It makes too much sense. Conor is the biggest star in the history of this sport and anything a man does is a huge success. And we believe that the UFC is the future of this sport, so we want to match young prospects. ”
Historically, the welterweight division has rarely seen newcomers break into the title scene. Former champion Kamaru Usman faced two opponents twice during his title reign, losing the title in a rematch to Edwards. The pair then fought a trilogy, with Edwards winning and Covington earning a third crack at undisputed gold after two failed bids against Usman.
Ideally for Gary, 2024 would lead him to the title starting in 2025.
“Let’s say it’s Colby in the summer. I don’t like fighting in the cold, so I’m not going to do MSG in November purely because it’s Baltic. [Kamaru] Usman or Shaf cut [Rakhmonov], that would be of interest to me,” Garry said. “What I’d like to do is fight in Las Vegas at the end of the year. That would be the ideal fight. Fight Colby in the summer, fight Rathman or a top three contender in December and have a chance to win a world title next year. to obtain.”
Gary, 26, has relied heavily on his hitting so far in his career. It’s no secret that it’s what he does best, and he has seven knockout wins with just one submission. Against Covington, he will be his first big test against a consistently aggressive wrestler. This is assuming the usual loss in Covington before the Edwards fight shows up.
According to Gary, the fight is all in Covington’s hands after the contracts are handed out. Essentially, Covington vs. Gary will be a classic striker vs. grappler matchup. Therefore, “Chaos”, which also has an advantage in experience points, should be advantageous.
Garry acknowledges how fair they are on paper and remains as confident as ever.
“He’s going to want a matchup that suits his style – I’m a striker – so let’s cut the crap and embrace the fight,” Garry said.
“What is Colby going to do against me? His striking is terrible, he can only wrestle, and his jiu-jitsu isn’t all that great. All he wants to do is hold back and throw a shot every now and then.” He’s not going to go into a dominant position and do any elbow strikes or go for submissions. All he has is this cardio that he’s obviously famous for. I’m going to wipe the floor with Colby, I’m going to retire him, I’m going to run out of gas by the second round. He’s too fast, too technical, and too good.”

Please publish your audio! (There it is!)
I would be happy if the UFC released the audio from me through the microphone. I literally cried when I saw that ending for the first time in 20 years. I think it was an automatic reaction. I’m still speechless. I still have goosebumps. Both players embody our sport. thin class. What a privilege! https://t.co/icjxat70SU

lol.
I disagree with Ian on this. This is the perfect opportunity to bring him back into the spotlight with a perfect fight to get him back into the fans’ good graces (or for the first time?).

Would Colby Covington vs. Ian Machado-Galley be a good co-main event for UFC 303?
