Justin Gaethje took off the shield at UFC 300.
We got what we wanted and expected in the third BMF title fight in UFC history. Gaethje and Max Holloway use a broomstick to keep him fighting for 25 minutes, which can make things interesting. Matched up against each other, the world witnessed an iconic clash, thanks in large part to Holloway’s insane last-second knockout at 24 minutes and 59 seconds of “The Highlight.”
BMF Tilt rightly earns Fight of the Night honors and will surely be on many people’s Fight of the Year shortlists come the end of 2024. In addition to the former, Holloway also earned a Performance of the Night bonus, giving him a total of $600,000 in bonuses. It’s an effort to undermine plans by “Blessed,” who can basically do whatever he wants, and rightly so. As for Gaethje, the undisputed title shot he’s been waiting for will need to come with a few more wins, and even though this recent matchup was mostly meant to keep him busy and have some fun. , he is happy to have earned it.
“[It’s a] Crazy game, you know? ” Gaethje told MMA Knockout. “Many people in my position would have decided not to take it.” [the Holloway fight]. No regrets. I think it was a huge, historic card for the UFC because it was so much fun. And being a part of that and having the best fight with that card will live on forever.
“And again, it was a big risk, I failed, if I had won that fight, if I had gotten knocked out right away, I would have won that fight.” [against Islam Makhachev], but that’s just the name of the game. ”
It was expected that UFC 300 would definitely bring out the next lightweight title challenger, and they did. But it wasn’t the big winners Holloway or Arman Tsarukyan, it was two-time undisputed title challenger and Gaethje’s rival Dustin Poirier. UFC CEO Dana White announced that champion Makhachev will defend his title against Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 on June 1st.
Gaethje, 35, won the BMF title by defeating Poirier by head kick KO in the second round in a rematch at UFC 291 in July 2023. Since then, “The Diamond” has only won one match, defeating Benoît Saint-Denis in the second round. Gaethje, who was knocked out at UFC 299, is happy to see things work out the way they did, even if he wasn’t the one to challenge Makhachev.
“I’m happy for Dustin,” Gaethje said. “Good for him. Someone had to fight. I don’t think it matters what we lose. He (Makhachev) was going to get there early, it was almost impossible [to make that fight in 5-6 weeks turnaround].
“This is the path the UFC wanted to go. So I can’t complain about it because I don’t want it to seem like that — in fact it’s the way it is, so I really have no complaints. I I’m not going to let it consume me.”
Once out of combat mode, Gaethje’s immediate plan is to rest and recover. The former BMF champion famously said he only had a few fights left in the lead-up to this fight and that it wasn’t enough. So what’s next?
It’s too early to name names or make expectations. One thing’s for sure: we haven’t seen the last of one of, if not the greatest entertainer in MMA history.
“In other words, [it] It was definitely a war,” Gaethje said. “Certainly the definition of war, especially being put to sleep like that. That definitely counted as one. Yes, but it’s not over yet. I’m going to fight in the future too – that’s the only thing I’m going to fight.” This is the method.
“As much as I wanted to change the way I compete, it’s not realistically possible. That’s how I compete. That’s how I’ve competed since I was a kid. So the next time I step out there, it’s not possible. We’re going to have the best live show on the planet. We’ll see if we have as good a dance partner as we had last weekend. But yeah, my intentions are the same.”

What a piece of trash this guy is. It’s insane to scream at a man who has represented our country the right way for 13 years, winning seven world and Olympic titles, to go home. This is why Armand hit that fan. People do things that have no consequences. This man may have wrestled the last fight of his career… https://t.co/dQhkx5Zi2p

We need to normalize treatment for adult men. We are not fathers. things are not the same. Our fathers did not grow up feeling close to the world and constantly connected to the entire planet. It’s different now. It’s okay to ask for help. You should be happy.

I’m pleasantly surprised to see that Gaethje will be fine with whatever options he has next. I think that’s mostly proof that he’s having fun no matter what, but for the most part they all seem fine to me.
