Ryan Garcia provided a bit of weirdness at the end.
The 140-pound challenger, scheduled to face Devin Haney on pay-per-view at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Saturday, will fight for Haney’s WBC belt after weighing 3.2 pounds over the weight limit Friday morning. I lost my rights.
Then, at the afternoon’s public (unofficial) weigh-in, he showed his professionalism by taking off his shirt on stage and gulping down what appeared to be beer.
The fighters then faced off in a final standoff, which was intense but relatively uneventful.
Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) has been acting erratically heading into the biggest fight of his career, including a series of bizarre and crude comments during Thursday’s final press conference.
He made a bet at a press conference that either Haney or a fighter who competed overweight would have to pay $500,000 for each remaining pound. That means Garcia owes Haney $1.5 million. It was then revealed that he agreed to pay, thereby allowing the match to take place as scheduled.
Given Garcia’s mental state and Haney’s pound-for-pound ability, some are concerned about Garcia’s health during the fight.
Haney won the title with a shutout of Regis Prograis in his most recent fight in December.
Haney vs. Garcia will be available to watch on DAZN PPV.
