Ryan Garcia left Game 7 with a victory.
Garcia won by majority decision after a roller coaster of 12 rounds in a grudge match against Devin Haney (both men split six straight fights as amateurs) on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. I got it. Garcia took the lead three times in the match and rattled Haney multiple times to make the score 114-110, 115-109. The score in the third was tied 112-112.
See the official scorecard below.
Judge Max DeLuca scored the fight 112-112, with Judges Eric Merlinsky (114-110) and Robin Taylor (115-109) scoring Garcia’s fight.
Garcia was knocked down twice, making the score 10-8, and in the seventh round he was penalized for continuing to throw punches after the referee ordered a break, making it 9-8.
Although Garcia can celebrate the highlight of his career, his win was marred somewhat by a terrible weigh-in error. Garcia entered his match against Haney, the current WBC super lightweight champion, weighing 3.2 pounds over his 140-pound limit. This mistake disqualified Garcia from competing for the title.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said Haney remains WBC champion despite the loss.
Congratulations to Ryan Garcia who defied all obstacles and won a big fight. Congratulations to Devin Haney for showing his big heart and class.
Similar to Corrales vs. Castillo 2, Haney remains the WBC champion because the challenger did not make weight.

Both fighters have since indicated they would be open to a rematch, but Garcia has made it clear he will never fight below 143 pounds again.
