A night to remember.
UFC 300 brought together MMA’s biggest stars on one fight card in Las Vegas. Naturally, the results of last weekend’s event had a huge impact on the promotion’s official rankings. Former featherweight champion Max Holloway faces-locks Justin Gaethje in a ‘BMF’ bout, scoring the highest knockout of all time, debuting at No. 9 at lightweight and skyrocketing up the pound-for-pound charts. I let it happen. Landing number 8.
Former PFL champion Kayla Harrison makes her Octagon debut with a chokehold over former 135-pound titleholder Holly Holm, clinching bantamweight (No. 4) and women’s pound-for-pound (No. 13) status. I made it. Additionally, rising lightweight Arman Tsarukyan took over the No. 1 spot at 155 pounds, defeating former fellow champion Charles Oliveira. As for Aljamain Sterling, he was removed from the bantamweight rankings thanks to his decision victory over Calvin Kattar and returned to the No. 8 spot in the 145-pound weight class.
Here’s how the UFC creates its official rankings.
The rankings were created by a voting committee made up of media professionals. Members of the media were asked to vote for who they thought was the top fighter in the UFC by weight class and pound-for-pound. Fighters are only eligible to vote if they are in active status with the UFC. Fighters can compete in multiple weight classes at once. Champions and interim champions are considered to be at the top of their respective weight classes and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight. However, champions can vote in pound-for-pound rankings.
Take a look at what the latest ranking field looks like, courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = ranking change, T = tie, *NR = previously unranked).
