Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight boxer Carlos Prates developed a smoking habit at a young age.
Prates dropped Charlie Radke with a powerful knee in the first round at UFC on ESPN 57 earlier this month. The Brazilian was spotted smoking a cigarette when he found out he’d earned a “Performance of the Night” bonus for his win. Prates also revealed that smoking cigarettes before and after fights is a fairly common habit for him.
Platts recently spoke in more detail about his smoking habits during a television appearance. “Show Me the Money” PodcastPlatz revealed that he started smoking when he was 12 or 13 years old, but the habit has grown over the years. The pandemic affected Platz, and “Nightmare” began smoking marijuana heavily. After realizing that marijuana was negatively affecting his mental health, Platz decided to smoke only tobacco.
“I think I started smoking when I was 12 or 13, like now of course,” he says, “but after the pandemic, everything stopped, I couldn’t train or play, and I started smoking a lot of marijuana and it made me feel bad… so I just started smoking cigarettes.”
Plates also revealed how he started smoking. Plates’ only family was his mother, so when she went to work, Plates was alone all day. In the streets of Brazil, there were many vices that a 12-year-old boy could face when he was alone.
“I remember being on the streets all day,” he said. “My mom was at work, so it was just me and my mom, and I was on the streets all day after work. [I} come back [from] “You have to go to school. And in Brazil, if you live on the street with your friends, you learn a lot of bad things.”
Platz has finished 17 of his 19 career wins and has now finished eight of his nine straight wins.
