An Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter was forced to leave a match due to improper weight loss, but it wasn’t for the reason you’d expect.
Ahead of UFC 301, William Gomis stepped on the scales for his featherweight bout against Jean Silva. The French athlete hobbled onto the stage wearing a T-shirt and shorts, without removing his clothes like the other competitors. Instead, a debilitated Gomis ended up on the podium, weighing 143 pounds, or three pounds below his weight class limit. Silva, who appeared to be unwell, needed assistance mostly to walk to and from the stage while committee officials tended to him.
Immediately after the strange scene unfolded, French media RMC Sports Combat announced the news that the match was suspended for medical reasons. Other news outlets also confirmed that the 145-pound bout was canceled, with MMA Fighting adding that Gomis reportedly vomited backstage before attempting the weigh-in. Although it is unclear, it is unlikely that the league will be able to bring in a substitute on game-day notice. Silver.
Gomis had been aiming for four straight wins in the Octagon since making his promotional debut in 2022. “Jaguar” started his UFC career with two decision wins over Jarno Elens and Francis Marshall, and then handed Giannis Genmoli his next punishment. He scored his third win with his promotion in September 2023 with a body kick. Silva also had plenty of momentum going into this matchup, as he made headlines in January by defeating Westin Wilson in just over four minutes. The Brazilian has a high completion rate of 92% and has won nine consecutive matches up until this now-cancelled match.
